Part 8

We drive back the same way we came and the whole time I’m trying to collect my thoughts. Some things make sense but some don’t. With mixed emotions I maintain my sole focus on the shadowy road and ask, “Mabel, correct me if I’m wrong but Claude was the one who abducted and murdered all those missing people, right?”

My eyes drift over to her, uncertainty clutches at my bones because she doesn’t respond for a moment. Then idly she strokes her arm as if it’s an old habit and says, “Remember the coin I gave you? Two sides to every story…? Keria, Claude wasn’t the general in the war of madness as Dr. Reid liked to call it. But don’t be fooled either he was just as involved as the good doctor.” She stares out of the passenger’s window and I can faintly see her reflection. Her forehead wrinkles just as the crow’s feet outline her blue distant eyes, she looks exhausted. The trip to the asylum must’ve taken everything out of her. And then suddenly she redirects her focus over to me.

“The true mastermind, behind the scene, was Dr. Reid, he supposedly leased out one of his houses to Claude. Then Claude simply lured the victims to the house in the woods. But the flip side of this coin is that Claude did not do the killing. The doctor did.”

“So, where were all the bodies found? Inside the house?”

“The police never found any signs of the missing in the house. I had told them to check behind the home and they did. They immediately exhumed sections of the sunflower field and that’s when the DNA evidence affirmed bone fragments, positively identifying twelve of the missing. And as you know, one body was never revealed, her name was Jamie Lynn McKenzie.”

I slow down as I approach the stoplight, by the time I reach it, it turns red and a soft glow emits across my faded dash. A car rolls to a stop beside us, the driver jamin’ to the late night music in his car. A lone pedestrian walks casually along the designated cross walk and I realize something. Everyone and everything around me seems different somehow, after what I have currently experienced I don’t think I’ll ever see things in the same light again. Slowly, I turn back to see the suitcase resting on my backseat. “Mabel? You know the whereabouts of Jamie Lynn McKenzie don’t you?”

“I can tell you where she’s not, she’s not in the field,” she admits as the light switches to green. I make my right hand turn, driving toward Brookside absorbing what she just said and an amplifying silence stretches out between us. She offers nothing else and I don’t pry any further until I see her house.

“Well then maybe she’s still alive, how do they know she was ever at the house?”

“I had a vision of her trying to escape the house. She had blood completely smeared all down her arms and legs and running for her life through the sunflower field in the dead of night.
